I would first like to start off by saying how truly honored and humbled I am to receive this prestigious accolade. When I became a teacher at Morris Knolls in 2003, I just wanted to do the best job that I possibly could. Year in and year out, I would try to do what I could to not only teach the young minds of Morris Knolls, but I also wanted them to enjoy learning. I had a few good teachers along the way that have shown me that education can be enjoyable as well as rewarding. I was the type of student in school that got more out of a class if the material was made interesting and applied to the real world, and this is something that I constantly strive to do with the material that I convey to my students.
The opportunity for me to receive teacher of the year would have not been possible without the key people in my life. Therefore, I would like to take this moment to recognize them:
- First and foremost my original teachers, my parents. Without their guidance, drive, determination, focus, support, and love, I would not be the teacher that I am today.
- Second, my sisters and the rest of my family for always being supportive of my dreams.
- Third, my high school Shakespeare teacher, Mr. Gowan, who made me appreciate and love the works of Shakespeare.
- Ken Hart for giving me the opportunity to achieve my dream.
- Next, Craig Miniter, for being a great mentor back in 2003.
- Rich Luttenberger and Joyce Wilson for writing such glowing recommendations.
- The outstanding faculty and administration at Morris Knolls. Thanks for always being so helpful.
- Garrett Orr, Sarah Tahan, Steve Fasulo, Valerie Caniglia, Christina Signorelli, Autumn Canfield, Kayla Merk, Erica Dwiatek, Sean O’Neill, and Conor McCloskey for making the Literary Society what it is today and for working those late nights to make the Renaissance Faire come together; when no one thought we could do it. You guys rock.
- All of my students who have allowed me to share a part of their lives.
- Last, but certainly not least, my lovely fiancé, Jenn. Her positive attitude and kind heart make me a better person.
In closing, I would like to say to my students that you can accomplish anything in this world if you set your minds to it. Never give up, never let anyone tell you that you cannot achieve your dreams, and never stop living.
