The Fall Play

The Spring Musical

Other
Fall Drama 2005

This production was truly a labor of love. The students you saw performing also wrote the script in under a month's time. We began with the theme of tolerance, and the students immediately began peeling away the layers; it sounds nice, but what does it really mean? We want more of it, but how do we achieve it? Is it the ultimate goal or only a stepping stone? From there we brainstormed different scenarios in which this idea-- tolerance-- might apply.

The first major section, "Gossip," was inspired by the children's game "Telephone," in which one statement becomes so distorted as it is passed from one person to another that it loses all semblance of truth. "McCarthyism" was the brainchild of some history-minded students who did extra research, and as a result, portions of the Grandfather's speech are actual words of those who appeared before the house of Un-American Activities Committee. The "Interviews" section reflects what the students see as teenagers' perceptions of the word "tolerance," and how it affects their lives, for better or for worse. "The Twilight Zone" has its roots in Jonathan Swift's satirical Gulliver's Travels, in which a man travels to strange, faraway lands to observe the silly ways of the inhabitants, and the reader realizes that those ways are not so far off from our own. The Shakespearean soliloquies and the Newscasts of (In)Tolerance Throughout History are the threads that hold this series of vignettes together.

The idea that we began was that tolerance (and intolerance) takes many forms, and is not as simple as it may seem. Hopefully you felt similarly about this show. These students have shown extraordinary dedication, creativity, and maturity in this endeavor, and it has been my honor, and my pleasure to work with them
