Note-Taking Strategies

Get Organized - assign your sources a number (1,2,3, etc.) or color (red, blue, etc.) & identify each note/index card accordingly

Stay Organized - one idea per note/index card (include page # from source - this will help w/ citations)

Essential Questions - keep your essential questions in mind while you read and take notes

Make it Your Own - paraphrasing - translate text into your own words; summarizing - shortened version stating the main points; quotes - exact words in quotation marks

Just the Facts - write main ideas or main points (key ideas, words, names, concepts, etc.)

Chose your Words Carefully - do not write down every word - BE BRIEF!

Use Symbols and Abbreviations - = for equal; w/o = without; US = United States, etc.
