Identify keywords, subject heading

and Dewey Call #s

From your initial reading (textbook, encyclopedias, etc.)

-identify keywords, concepts, main ideas, etc.
-search index to locate cross references
-create a keyword list

Use the keyword list to

-search the card catalog (identify titles, subject headings, call #)
-add new keywords/subject headings to your search

Using Dewey call numbers

-retrieve titles from the stacks
-browse the stacks for additional titles/information -serendipity - finding the unknown

With book in hand

-skim the table of contents of reference and nonfiction titles (generate ideas)
-skim the index of reference and nonfiction titles (generate ideas)
-add new keywords to your list
